I began teaching third grade in January 1979, at the same school I had completed student teaching during the fall of 1978.  After teaching all areas of third grade, including teaching summer school for various other grades, I finished my special education endorsement in 1982, and began teaching special education at Lakeside Elementary.  During this time, I also did academic testing and screening.  Completing a maternity leave, I returned to Chattanooga City Schools to teach special education at East Brainerd Elementary, half-day, for a couple of years before taking a full-time, split position at DuPont and Lakeside Elementary Schools.  For these schools, I taught math and Language Arts.  After another maternity leave, I returned to take a first grade position, teaching all subject areas, at Hillcrest Elementary School, where also I participated as the classroom teacher in a pilot inclusion program for the Chattanooga City School System.  Also, during this time, I was a member of a special education committe to merge Chattanooga City School and Hamilton County's special education programs.  The year of the merger of the two school systems, I accepted a position at Chattanooga Christian School to teach fifth grade.  For that grade, I taught math and science.  When the school developed a special education program, rather than a tutorial-type program, I was asked to start the elementary special education program and coordinate the same type paperwork, screening, direct services, etc., as those of Hamilton County.  In 2004, I came back to the public schools, to Hixson Middle School, as an inclusion teacher.  In 2011, I returned to the regular classroom to teach math, again.

I have been a resident of Hixson all my life, and I am a descendant of both the Hixson and Vandergriff families, early settlers of the Hixson community.  I started out attending Ganns Middle Valley Elementary School, the same school my parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins attended, and then I followed their same paths, to go to Hixson Junior High School and graduate from Hixson High School, in 1975.  I am the fourth of five generations of my family to attend the Hixson Schools.  My husband, Alan Cofer, who is an electrical contractor, and I have been married for thirty-two, soon to be thirty-three, years.  We have three children who are adults, and we also have a year old grand-daughter.  Unfortunately, I am recovering from ankle surgery, now, but before that, my husband and I went deep-sea fishing several times a year.  We enjoy traveling and spending time with our family and friends.
