ROAR (Restoring Opportunity, Achievement and Resilience) is a free after school program that offers academic support and enrichment opportunities for Hixson Middle School students. ROAR is a partnership between Hixson Middle School and Northside Neighborhood House (NNH) as a part of the Hixson Middle Community School initiative. Ms. Keana Walker of NNH serves as the HxMS Community School Coordinator. In addition to overseeing the ROAR Program, Ms. Walker collaborates with HxMS administration, staff, and other community partners to connect teachers, students and families with additional information, support and resources throughout the school day.

During ROAR, a snack is provided by the YMCA, ROAR staff helps with homework from 3-4 pm and from 4-5 pm students engage in enrichment activities. It is important to note that our staff provides academic support and not specialized tutoring. We are here to provide the support and space needed for students to complete their homework, but students are ultimately responsible for their work. We collaborate with community partnerships such as YMCA Mobile Fit, Chef Brad, HABIT (Human Animal Bond In Tennessee), Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church, Girls Inc., and others to provide students with new and exciting opportunities. We are always expanding our community partnerships to not only provide impactful enrichment for students but to connect families with any needed resources.
