Summer Reading

This summer you should read as many books as you can.

Here’s why  out-of-school reading matters:
➔ It helps develop interests.
➔ It will enhance your vocabulary.
➔ It will make you a better writer.
➔ It relaxes you and can reduce stress.
➔ It prevents a loss in reading proficiency.

As a student at Hixson Middle School you are required to read Loser by Jerry Spinelli. To create a community of readers Hixson Middle  will use the one book, one school approach to summer reading. The goal of  a school-wide summer reading book selection is to have a shared  experience and develop empathy.

Loser must be read prior to the start of the school year. The  culminating summer reading event is the book club celebration on Friday,  August 30, 2019. Small group book clubs will be facilitated by faculty  members. The book clubs give students an opportunity to discuss their  thinking about their reading. Students will be assessed on their  comprehension and participation.

Rent or purchase a copy of the summer reading book. You may  purchase your own copy or check out the book from the public library.  Don’t forget the online option with your public library card. Students can  borrow ebooks and audiobooks.

If you need ideas for additional summer reading book titles, the  Chattanooga Public Library has posted suggested summer reading lists for  2019 online
